Members of the IUPUI Men’s Soccer team recently visited fourth-grade students at Louis B. Russell Jr. School 48, but it wasn’t to teach them how to improve their scoring on the soccer field.

These student-athletes were at this IPS eastside school reading to students through the Real Men Read program.

Volunteers who participate in Real Men Read are Indianapolis business and community members who IPS fourth-graders for an hour once a month. Mentors are assigned to the same class for the year.

In turn, each student in the class receives a copy of the book read aloud by the mentor allowing our scholars to create their own personal libraries.

Real Men Read is an IPS mentoring program designed to inspire students and build literacy skills by establishing supportive and beneficial relationships between children and adults.
