Beginning August 12, 2019, snacks for afterschool programs at some IPS schools will be more substantial than in years past.


The current afterschool treat typically consists of two items: snack crackers and milk. But for the 2019-2020 school year, these snacks will get supersized.


Dena Bond, IPS Food Service director, said the new Super Snack Program will include four to six items (proteins, whole grains, a vegetable, fruit and milk).  Sample menus include:

  • Turkey Ham & Cheese on Hawaiian Roll, Spicy Sunflower Seeds, Romaine Salad, Cinnamon Applesauce, Milk.
  • Cheddar Cheese Stick, Yogurt, Cornbread Muffin, Celery Bites, Cantaloupe Chunks, Milk.
  • SunButter Cup, Mozzarella Cheese Stick, Banana Muffin, Sugar Snap Peas, Red Apple Slices, Milk.
  • Turkey Pepperoni Pizza Kit, Broccoli Florets, Mandarin Orange Cup, Milk.


“It’s a way for us to give a more substantial snack because some afterschool programs may run from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., and that’s a long stretch when some of our students eat lunch at 11 a.m.,” said Bond. “We know they need the calories and the nutrients, and we have the opportunity to do this program, so we felt that this was important.”


Currently, 36 schools throughout the district participate in the afterschool snack program. Afterschool activities are sponsored by the school or other community partners such as the YMCA, AYS, John Boner Neighborhood Centers, Shepherd Community Center, etc. The school or sponsor runs the activities, supervises students, and serves the snack.


Bond said the only difference these schools will experience is the expanded menu.


The new Super Snack Program, which qualifies as at At-Risk Afterschool Meal under the Department of Agriculture’s Child and Adult Care Food Program, is open to schools in low-income areas in which 50 percent of the student population is eligible for free and reduced priced meals. Schools must also provide regularly scheduled educational and/or enrichment activities in an organized, structured and supervised environment.
