Crispus Attucks guard Teyon Scanlan left a memorable impression with Attucks basketball fans this year, especially during the team’s matchup against Twin Lakes Senior High School on March 25, when he scored 24 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal.
That performance helped the Crispus Attucks Tigers win the title of 2017 IHSAA 3A Boys Basketball State Championship.
The Achiever recently caught up with Teyon to find out more about the student athlete off the court.
Outside of basketball, what is your favorite pastime?
“My favorite thing to do, outside of basketball? That’s tough … Cleaning the house, sleep and maybe call my grandma and get on her nerves sometimes. That’s really it though, mainly sleep.”Teyon Scanlan
What is your favorite subject in school?
“My favorite subject is math. I’ve grown to like numbers, so math just grabbed my attention. You’ve got to count your money the right way!”
Who is your favorite professional athlete?
“Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers point guard). You know why? His ball handling, jump shot and because he’s a clutch (player). Nobody can guard him. He plays defense. He’s the best, all day long. Cleveland’s about to get another championship this year.”
What was your favorite part of all the celebrations in the weeks that followed your championship win?
“We’ve gotten to do a lot since then. But, I’d have to say it was being up on that black riser in Bankers Life Fieldhouse right after the game. Standing up there and holding the trophy, that was the best part. I’ve dreamed about that since I got to Attucks in eighth grade.”
Where are you heading next?
“I’m heading to play ball at Ancilla College in Plymouth, Indiana. I chose Ancilla because I feel like I know what the coaching staff there wants to do with me. It’s a small school, so it’s not too big for me. I’ll be able to fit in and I feel like I’ll be able to get to know the teachers well.”
